A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR
July 5th – 18th 2010

This city-wide installation connects five bars, clubs, pubs, and social venues in Dundee by creating video snapshots that can be accessed by the clientele and staff. The videos on display have been created during a two month period of recording by artist David Yu and his team of apprentices, with help from staff and patrons. The footage will rotate between the participating venues during a two week period until it is installed in the original location of capture A social snapshot of should manifest through the stories, activity, and energy that people contribute to this project whilst mapping and connecting the social demographic of Dundee

This project is a part of the umbrella project The Nine Trades of Dundee which was initiated by Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art and Design Exhibitions and funded by the Scottish Arts Council. The Nine Trades project brings art and trade together commissioning nine artists with second non-art trades to lead collaborative art projects within those environments. This installation saw artist David Yu work within the community of the bar, pub, and club industry to develop this city-wide installation.

IF YOU BUILD IT....... THEY WILL COME

So for the last week my trusty apprentices { Fiona, Ruth, Sekai, Adam} have been non- stop working around the clock on creating the units that house all the videos for the bars/ pubs/ clubs. We painted sanded decorated and basically lived in the studio. the turn around time was immense. Here is a sneak peak of the units all together finally working! This is the last time that all of the units will be seen together. They are now all operating live in the city!

Friday Night House Party

Who said art can't be fun? Last Friday my apprentices and I threw a Surveillance Party. The idea of the party was to give everyone some sort of recording device. Whatever was captured would be incorporated into the Ninetrades Project! The work will exist in a private flat where people could come around by appointment only to view the work in a domestic setting. This portion of the project bridges the private and the public aspect within the social spectrum.

The party was crazy! The police paid us a visit around 1am... Apparently someone complained from one street over... Whoop whoop that's the sound of da police!
